Three days ago, at the foot of Atlas Mountains, the Adventure started. First afternoon was spent in a relaxed, educational atmosphere, on the grounds of very traditional moroccan palace. The adventurers had a briefing from Jan Kalmar – the essential information not to be lost in the desert.
Next day the journey was off to an exhilarating start. From cruising the tarmac roads of Marrakesh to exploring the iconic site of Aït Benhaddou, where scenes from Gladiator were filmed. We tackled our first gravel roads, perfect for getting accustomed to the terrain.
Venturing into the Zagora area, known for its breathtaking palm groves, our drivers also honed their navigation skills with the tablets while getting accustomed to their cars. Day’s end found us at the stunning Azalaï Lodge, nestled in the heart of the world’s largest palm grove along the Draa Valley.
One more day: we ventured into the awe-inspiring Erg Chegaga National Park, home to Morocco’s tallest dunes, reaching up to 300m. Our cars and drivers were put to the ultimate test as we battled through the endless sea of sand, with our sights set on reaching the planned finish point. Driving as a group, we ensured that no one was left behind, overcoming the countless dunes along the way.
As the early afternoon sun bathed the desert in golden light, we arrived at our desert camp, hungry for more adventure. Some of us embarked on an exhilarating dune bashing experience, while others tried their hand at a round of golf amidst the sandy terrain.
As the sun set on the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we gathered for a magical evening under the starry desert sky. Before retiring to our tents for the night, we indulged in the flavors of a typical Moroccan dinner, savoring every moment of our desert escapade.
